How to Report a Missing Person in India

Every minute matters. Here is exactly what to do — in order — when someone you know goes missing in India.

If the person is in immediate danger — call 112 (national emergency) right now. Do not wait.

Step 1 — File a Police FIR immediately

Go to the nearest police station and file a First Information Report (FIR). Under Indian law, police cannot refuse to register a missing person FIR — there is no mandatory waiting period.

💡 If police refuse to file an FIR, escalate to the Superintendent of Police or file a complaint at pgportal.gov.in.

Step 2 — Report on Trackthemissingchild.gov.in

The Government of India runs an official missing persons portal. Upload the photo and details — this circulates to police stations and child welfare committees across the country.

Step 3 — Alert local hospitals and railway stations

Many missing persons — especially those in mental distress — are found at railway stations or admitted to government hospitals under unknown identity. Call your nearest government hospital and ask to check unidentified admissions.

Step 4 — Use Reach to file a verified online report

Reach gives you a fast, private way to submit a detailed report that goes directly to a real person for immediate action — alongside your official FIR.

  3. Post on local Facebook community groups with last location
  4. Check hospitals, railway stations, bus stands nearby
  5. Register on the government portal
  6. Contact a local NGO like iCall or Vandrevala for guidance
